Stellenbosch Business School is very proud to hold the “Triple Crown” of international accreditations, referring to the simultaneous accreditation of a school by the three most prestigious and influential accrediting bodies: AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), AMBA (Association of MBAs), and EQUIS (EFMD Quality Improvement System). This distinction is considered the highest standard of achievement for business schools globally, held by only 1% of all schools.

An executive journey that moves healthcare leaders from managing today’s operations to shaping tomorrow’s healthcare organisation. In the spirit of university-industry collaboration, this programme was co-created to bring together the academic rigour of Stellenbosch Business School Executive Development with applied healthcare expertise from Nexus Healthcare Advisory Services.
Build the self-awareness, ethical judgement and contextual leadership capability to navigate complexity and lead people well.
Strengthen operational excellence, governance, patient safety, quality and risk management to improve hospital performance and outcomes.
Lead change, develop talent and apply financial stewardship to build resilient, accountable and sustainable healthcare organisations.
Harness digital health, AI, data, patient experience and innovation to execute strategy and transform healthcare delivery.
Hospitals are being asked to improve access, quality, efficiency and patient experience at the same time, and usually with fewer resources than the task deserves. The leaders who carry that load are expected to balance clinical, operational, financial, ethical and people considerations in decisions that carry real consequences for patients and staff alike.
The Executive Development Programme in Hospital Leadership is an 11-month hybrid learning journey (a combination of remote learning via Zoom, online self-paced learning, and face-to-face) that equips current and emerging hospital managers to lead at organisational level. It takes you beyond day-to-day hospital management and builds the strategic, financial, governance, people and digital capabilities needed to run a modern hospital in the South African and broader African context.
Where most management programmes treat these domains separately, this one deliberately connects them. You will develop the judgement, influence and systems thinking to move from managing hospital operations to shaping sustainable performance, patient experience and the future of healthcare.
For leaders responsible for people, performance and patient outcomes This programme is designed for current and emerging hospital managers and healthcare leaders who are responsible for, or preparing to take responsibility for, leading people, services or functions within complex healthcare environments. It serves both public and private healthcare. It will suit you if you recognise these pressures:
Healthcare systems are under pressure to improve access, quality, efficiency and patient experience all at once.
Leaders must balance clinical, operational, financial, ethical and people considerations in decisions that carry real consequences.
Digital transformation and AI are changing how hospitals operate, while governance, risk and accountability remain non-negotiable.
If that is the leadership gap you are working to close, this programme was built around it.
Hospital leaders rarely fail because they lack technical knowledge. They struggle because the demands of the role sit across domains that were never taught together.
The skills that earned you the role are not the skills the role requires. You are now accountable for budgets, governance, culture and performance, often with no formal preparation for any of it.
Clinical need, operational capacity, financial constraint and ethical obligation seldom point the same way. Without a framework for weighing them, decisions get made by whichever pressure is loudest that week.
The day disappears into escalations, staffing gaps and immediate crises. The improvement work that would reduce those crises never gets started.
Initiatives launch well and then decay, because the underlying systems, governance and accountability structures were not redesigned alongside them.
Medical scheme constraints, public sector budget limits and the shift towards value-based care demand financial judgement that most clinical and operational leaders were never trained to exercise.
Hospitals are dense with professional hierarchies and long-standing practice. Change that is technically sound still fails when stakeholder dynamics are not led deliberately.
Scarce skills, burnout and turnover erode continuity of care and leadership capacity at the same time.
The pressure to adopt is real, but so is the risk of investing in technology without the data maturity, governance or change capability to use it responsibly.
Four study blocks build capability progressively, from context and personal mastery through to transformation, digital health and strategy execution. Thirteen modules in total.
A leadership self-assessment, healthcare context questionnaire, reflection prompt and four to six hours of targeted pre-reading, followed by a half-day orientation.

Stellenbosch Business School Executive Development is the executive development arm of Stellenbosch Business School. For over two decades we have partnered with Africa’s leading organisations and forward-thinking individuals to design immersive, practical learning experiences that build real leadership capacity, unlock growth and connect people across industries and borders. Our work rests on rigorous content, renowned faculty, radical collaboration and a relentless focus on people. Stellenbosch Business School holds all three of the international accreditations that matter most in business education: AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA.
Nexus Healthcare Advisory Services is a South African healthcare advisory firm built on the conviction that effective, informed decision making is what delivers high-quality health outcomes. Its multidisciplinary team of experienced healthcare executives and industry experts advises organisations across strategic planning, growth, operational improvement, financial analysis, governance and risk, quality improvement and digital health, drawing on deep knowledge of current trends, regulation and best practice in healthcare management. Its leadership brings decades at the most senior levels of Southern African healthcare, including Mediclinic Southern Africa.
Leadership development on its own risks staying abstract. Healthcare consulting on its own risks staying technical. This partnership puts the two together, so that leadership theory is taught through the operational, financial and governance realities of running a hospital, by people who have done it. Stellenbosch Business School Executive Development brings the learning design, faculty and academic standard. Nexus Healthcare Advisory Services brings the sector expertise, the practitioner faculty and the current view of where African healthcare is heading.
On successful completion of the programme, you will receive a Certificate of Competence issued by Stellenbosch University. The programme carries NQF Level 8 learning outcomes.
Certificates are issued as secure digital certificates, with printed copies available on request.

Many healthcare organisations need to build leadership capability across a group rather than one individual at a time. There are two routes.
The Executive Development Programme in Hospital Leadership delivered exclusively to a closed cohort from your organisation, at a venue and schedule that suit you. The programme content stays as designed, with scope for value-adds and light customisation, and your people work through real challenges from your own hospitals. Minimum participant numbers apply.
A fully bespoke leadership intervention designed around your organisation’s strategy, structure and pressures, drawing on the same faculty and healthcare expertise. These range from a single day to a full twelve-month journey.
The advantage of a closed cohort is alignment. Your leaders build a shared language, work on your organisation’s actual problems, and leave with improvement work already under way.
Complete the enquiry form and our team will be in touch with the full programme brochure, dates, and application details.
