Global best practice, grounded in African realities.
The Africa Senior Management Development Programme is contextualised for senior managers and organisations across Africa. It is facilitated by faculty who are subject matter experts, with significant insight into the private and public sectors in Africa and globally. Participants come from a wide range of cultures, countries, industries, and roles, with the majority drawn from African corporates and public sector organisations.
The programme places particular emphasis on the unique challenges of emerging markets. While the theoretical frameworks and tools are universal, case studies and examples are drawn largely from the political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal factors that shape management and leadership on the African continent. Interactive discussion forums and project work are grounded in the same context, so what participants learn reflects the environments they actually lead in.
Participants develop a cross-disciplinary understanding of business, and are encouraged to collaborate across diverse business environments and organisational contexts, building a network of peers from across the continent along the way.
The Africa Senior Management Development Programme pairs universal strategic frameworks with African case studies and regional examples, so every insight is relevant to the markets you lead in.
Africa’s business landscape is changing fast. Senior leaders need to see further and think wider.
Effective leaders know that in business the only constant is change, and across Africa that change is arriving faster than ever. New technologies, new business models, shifting customer expectations, regulatory reform, and deepening regional integration are reshaping markets in emerging African economies. It is an intricate, dynamic environment that poses real challenges for senior leaders who are not prepared, and real opportunities for those who are.
The scale of the opportunity is clear. According to the World Bank, the African Continental Free Trade Area connects 1.3 billion people across 55 countries, with a combined GDP of US$3.4 trillion. At the same time, the pressure on leadership is intensifying. PwC’s 29th Global CEO Survey found that only 30% of CEOs are confident about revenue growth over the next 12 months, while the World Economic Forum estimates that 39% of workers’ core skills will change by 2030.
Yet many senior managers were promoted for excelling within a function. They know their part of the business intimately, but have not always been given the wider lens: the economic literacy to read African and global markets, the financial fluency to judge viability, the strategic discipline to set direction, and the leadership range to take a diverse workforce with them through change, within the legislative and cultural realities of the countries they operate in.
Closing that gap takes a deliberate shift in how senior managers think: from managing a department to leading a business unit, from reacting to disruption to anticipating it, and from contributing at a functional level to shaping the organisation at a strategic one.
The Africa Senior Management Development Programme equips senior managers across Africa to stop leading a function and start leading the business.
Senior management is not a bigger version of middle management. It is a different job.
It asks leaders to think across the business rather than within a function; to weigh economic, market, financial, technological, and human factors at the same time; and to make decisions whose consequences reach far beyond their own teams. It demands a strategic and design-thinking mindset, the agility to lead through change, and the credibility to be trusted with the organisation’s future.
The Africa Senior Management Development Programme is a 7-month remote programme that equips experienced senior managers to make that transition. It broadens their worldview and equips them with the strategic skills to navigate an evolving business landscape in emerging African countries, so they can become resilient, agile agents of change for their teams and organisations. It is equally valuable for individuals investing in the next stage of their careers and for organisations building a bench of leaders ready for executive responsibility.
Across twelve integrated modules, participants move from the wider context to the business unit: from leadership in a complex world, economics, and the macro trends shaping African markets, through brand, marketing, digital transformation, and strategy, to sustainability, innovation, human capital, financial management, and responsible AI governance. Every module combines universal frameworks with African case studies and regional examples, and is anchored in the participant’s own organisation, so learning is applied as it happens.
Participants are guided throughout by a Learning Process Facilitator, who acts as mediator, mentor, and advisor, and works closely with each syndicate on its Business-Driven Action Learning project, where participants apply their learning to a real business challenge.
Participants leave with more than knowledge. They leave with a strategic view of the whole business, and the confidence to lead it.
For Organisations:
This programme is designed for organisations across Africa, in both the private and public sectors, that need their senior managers to lead beyond their functional boundaries. These are the leaders responsible for divisions, business units, and teams of managers: the people your organisation relies on to turn strategy into performance, manage risk, and carry the business through change, often across several countries and regulatory environments.
If your organisation is facing strategies that stall between the boardroom and the business unit, leaders who struggle to connect financial performance to strategic choices, or a senior bench that is not yet ready for executive roles, this programme addresses those gaps directly. Nominate senior managers to an open enrolment intake, where they learn alongside leaders from other organisations, industries, and countries, or run the programme as a closed cohort contextualised to your organisation’s strategy, markets, and culture.
For Participants:
This programme is for you if you are an experienced senior manager who leads other middle or senior managers, and you know that the next step in your career asks for a broader, more strategic way of thinking.
You are likely highly capable within your own field, but increasingly accountable for decisions that span the whole business: interpreting economic and market shifts across African and global markets, judging financial viability, shaping strategy, driving innovation, and leading a diverse workforce through change. You may be preparing for an executive role, stepping into a larger portfolio, or recognising that the tools that have served you well so far are no longer enough.
This programme gives you the frameworks, commercial fluency, and strategic confidence to lead at the level your role demands, and to be ready for the one that comes next.
The Africa Senior Management Development Programme develops experienced managers into strategic, agile, and future-focused leaders who impact their organisations at a business level rather than a functional one, within the realities of emerging African markets. Grounded in the understanding that senior leaders must read their environment before they can shape it, the programme follows a structured journey: from interpreting the economic, market, and technological forces shaping Africa, through designing integrated strategy and evaluating financial viability, to leading innovation, human capital, sustainability, and responsible AI adoption. Participants develop the strategic and design-thinking mindset, commercial acumen, and leadership range needed to turn disruption into opportunity, and to lead their teams and organisations with confidence.
On successful completion of this programme, participants will be able to:
For Organisations:
African business environments are becoming more complex, with economic volatility, regulatory change, technological disruption, and deepening regional integration all reshaping the markets organisations compete in. Senior leaders are expected to navigate that complexity while keeping the organisation pointed in a clear strategic direction. When they cannot, strategy drifts and the organisation becomes reactive. This programme equips senior leaders to read their environment, anticipate disruption, and hold strategic direction steady, even as conditions change around them.
Strategy, financial viability, innovation, sustainability, technology, and organisational change are too often managed as separate agendas, owned by different leaders and pulling in different directions. When they are not integrated, investment decisions suffer, initiatives compete rather than compound, and the organisation struggles to act as a coherent whole. This programme builds senior leaders who see these as one connected system, and who can design and execute integrated strategies within their business units.
Rapid technological and market developments, from digital adoption and artificial intelligence to shifting consumer behaviour, require leaders to make strategic decisions that weigh emerging opportunities against new risks, governance obligations, and long-term sustainability. In emerging African markets, the pace and nature of that change can be unpredictable. This programme equips senior leaders to interpret disruptive technology and macroeconomic trends, lead digital transformation, and govern AI responsibly, so the organisation can move quickly without losing control.
For Individuals:
The skills that earned you a senior role are not always the skills that will make you successful in it. Senior managers are increasingly expected to think beyond their function, shaping strategy, judging viability, and influencing outcomes across the whole organisation. Without a deliberate shift in perspective, it is easy to keep solving functional problems while the bigger picture goes unattended. This programme helps you make that shift, from contributing at a functional level to impacting the organisation at a strategic one.
Senior leaders are expected to champion transformation, often while managing their own uncertainty and the concerns of the people around them. In fast-changing environments, the ability to stay agile, adapt your approach, and bring people with you through change is what separates leaders who drive transformation from those who are overtaken by it. This programme develops the transformational leadership behaviours, resilience, and agility you need to lead change with conviction in complex and uncertain environments.
Strategic challenges rarely belong to a single discipline. Addressing them well means weighing financial, human capital, innovation, technology, market, and sustainability considerations at the same time, and many senior managers have only been deeply exposed to one or two of these. This programme gives you a broad, current foundation across every major discipline of senior management, grounded in African contexts, so you can approach strategic challenges from every angle and make decisions that hold up across the business.
For Organisations:
This programme strengthens your organisation’s strategic leadership capability at the level where it matters most. Senior leaders return better equipped to respond to complexity, disruption, and changing African business environments, with the economic insight, strategic discipline, and leadership range to keep the organisation moving forward. For your organisation, that means fewer costly surprises, sharper resource allocation, and a senior leadership layer that can be trusted with greater autonomy.
Better decisions come from a better view of the business. This programme enables senior leaders to integrate strategy, innovation, sustainability, financial viability, human capital, and market considerations when addressing organisational priorities, rather than treating each in isolation. The result is decisions that account for consequence across the whole business, and strategies that are commercially sound, sustainable, and aligned with the organisation’s direction.
Transformation succeeds or fails on the strength of the leaders driving it. By equipping senior leaders to develop and implement strategic initiatives, lead digital transformation, and respond to emerging technological and macroeconomic trends, this programme builds your organisation’s capacity to change deliberately rather than reactively, turning disruption into an opportunity your organisation is ready to seize.
For Individuals:
You will develop an agile, strategic, and design-thinking mindset that enables you to operate well beyond your individual function. Through strategy, innovation, design thinking, and futures-focused analysis of African and global markets, you will learn to frame problems at a systems level, test assumptions, and design solutions that work across the whole business.
You will strengthen your ability to lead organisational change, develop strategic initiatives, and make sound decisions in complex and uncertain environments. Business-Driven Action Learning adds a practical edge, putting that capability to work on a real business challenge, so you leave not only better able to cope with change, but ready to lead it and to help others do the same.
You will broaden your strategic perspective, learning to treat financial, sustainability, innovation, technology, market, and human capital issues as interconnected business priorities. Together with a Certificate of Competence from Stellenbosch University, pathways to further study through recognition of prior learning, and a network of senior peers from across the continent, this positions you for greater responsibility and the executive roles ahead.
